Vision Care From the Earliest Years
At Highstreet Eyecare Center, we consider every patient who enters our doors a member of our family. Naturally, that means we’re delighted to have the littlest members of your family join us at the practice. From our dedicated children’s nook to the exam rooms run by our friendly and compassionate optometrists, children have a special place here.
When you’re scheduling your next eye exam, make it a family affair—bring the kids in to have their eyes looked after, too.
How Often Should My Child Have an Eye Exam?
It’s necessary to monitor your little one’s vision regularly. Since children grow so quickly, they experience lots of changes in their eyes.
The Canadian Association of Optometrists recommends keeping to the following schedule:
- First exam: between 6–9 months
- Second exam: between 2–5 years
- Yearly exams: from 5 years until adulthood
This exam schedule is just the baseline: if your child is at higher risk of any eye conditions or needs more regular testing, we may recommend that they come in more regularly. Remember, each set of eyes is as unique as the person peering out of them, so there is no one-size-fits-all eye care.
Watch for Signs of Vision Problems
Vision problems can interfere with your child’s development and school performance. The bulk of what children learn in their classrooms is presented visually.
Though you can’t see through their eyes and likely aren’t present in their classroom, some signs can indicate that your child’s sight may be troubling them, like:
- Head tilting
- Squinting
- Excessive eye rubbing
- Regular headache complaints
- Avoiding reading or near-work
- Losing their place or skipping lines when reading
- Holding books and screens too close
- Runny, watery eyes
- Crusty eyes
- Closing one eye while trying to focus
- Blinking too often
- Having an eye that turns away from the central line of sight
If you notice these in your child or your child mentions that they have blurred or double vision, bring them in for a full eye exam.
