Ease Modern Life’s Burden on Your Eyes

Eye strain isn’t a new phenomenon, but the amount of time we spend on screens has worsened the problem. Many of us use digital devices to work, play, socialize, and learn, and all that screen time can lead to visual disruptions and uncomfortable eye symptoms.

You don’t need to throw your smartphone or laptop in the trash to ease eye strain. With help from your eye care team, you can manage the symptoms—and get to the bottom of any underlying causes that could be making eye strain worse.

Digital Eye Strain & its Symptoms

Eye strain is caused by the extra effort our eyes put forward to focus for a long period. This can happen when driving, reading, or doing detailed, up-close work.

Digital eye strain refers to the excessive strain caused by long hours of focused screen use. It’s sometimes called computer vision syndrome.

Symptoms of digital eye strain include:

  • Headaches
  • Sore, tired, burning, or itching eyes
  • Watery eyes
  • Dry eyes
  • Blurred or double vision
  • Sore neck, shoulders, or back
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Struggling to keep your eyes open

If you’re struggling with digital eye strain, visit our office. Having an out-of-date prescription, an undiagnosed refractive error, or dry eye syndrome can cause your eyes to work overtime, worsening eye strain symptoms.

Simple Suggestions to Soothe Overworked Eyes

It’s not reasonable—or realistic—to suggest cutting out screens cold-turkey. But making some easy adjustments can prevent digital eye strain.

Follow the 20-20-20 Rule

The 20-20-20 rule can fit short breaks into your day: every 20 minutes, take a 20-second break and focus your eyes on something 20 feet away.

Ergonomics and proper screen setup can help alleviate the effects of digital eye strain. Make the following changes to help your eyes and body work more efficiently:

  • Sit with good posture—feet evenly on the ground, back straight, not slumping over your keyboard
  • Keep your screen an arm’s length away and about 20° below eye level
  • Keep your screen clean to avoid looking through dust and fingerprints
  • Avoid glare from windows and overhead lights

We tend to blink less when we use digital devices, leading our tears to evaporate faster. Be sure you make an effort to blink more frequently to combat this, and come in to see if you’re suffering from dry eye syndrome.

You should also wear the correct prescription lenses when you’re using screens. An eye exam can make sure your vision is being corrected appropriately.
