Controlling Myopia for a Positive Visual Outlook
Myopia is a widespread condition. It affects 30% of Canadians, and by 2050 it’s estimated that nearly half the global population will have myopic vision.
Since myopia tends to present in children and continues to change and develop until their 20s, we have a unique opportunity to curb the growth of myopia in young people. Come see how we can boost your child’s vision.
What Is Myopia?
Myopia, in plain terms, is nearsightedness. It means your eyes can focus on things up close, but clear distance vision is a struggle. Myopia occurs when the eye grows too long, or the cornea is too steeply curved. This results in the light hitting the wrong part of the retina when it enters the eye, leading to blurred vision.
The Importance of Myopia Control for Kids
So, why is myopia control important? Why can’t you just let it develop and have your child wear glasses until they’re old enough to have laser eye surgery?
If myopia progresses too far, it can become high myopia. This is an advanced form of myopia, which increases the risk of glaucoma, cataracts, macular degeneration, and even retinal tearing or detachment.
Addressing myopia while your child is young and still growing makes it possible to slow the progression of myopia. Staying a step ahead of myopia can improve your child’s visual outcomes as they age.
Assessing Your Child’s Myopia Progression
Early detection and regular assessment are crucial in managing myopia progression. One way we evaluate and monitor your child’s nearsightedness and eye health is with Topcon MYAH. This all-in-one device provides precise measurements of axial length and creates a detailed map of the cornea’s curvature (topography).
Axial Measurement
As your child’s eye grows (axial length), nearsightedness can worsen. Topcon MYAH precisely measures this growth, allowing us to track myopia progression and assess the effectiveness of myopia control methods.
Corneal Topography
The cornea is the clear dome at the front of your child’s eye. Corneal topography creates a detailed map of the cornea, allowing us to assess its overall health, customize contact lenses, and identify irregularities that might influence myopia development.
How Highstreet Eyecare Center Manages Myopia
If your child has been diagnosed with myopia, different correction avenues exist that can help them attain clearer vision. We can recommend the most appropriate treatment for their age and lifestyle.
We also provide a dedicated myopia program that includes the following:
- Axial length measurement every 3 months
- Vision checks every 3 months
- Annual retinal imaging
- Annual corneal topography
Atropine Drops
Low concentration atropine drops have been effective in slowing myopia’s progression. Concentrations as low as .01–.05% have been used with success and few side effects.
MiyoSmart Lenses
MiyoSmart lenses are specially designed glasses lenses that have been shown to reduce myopia progression in children by up to 60%. They feature a ring-shaped treatment area to manage myopia, while the remainder of the lens offers clear vision.
Soft Contact Lenses
Soft contact lenses for myopia, like MiSight 1 day by Coopervision and ACUVUE Abiliti 1-Day, are daily disposable lenses designed to control myopia. Since these lenses are single-use, they’re easier and safer for children as young as 8 to manage.
These lenses feature mixed corrective zones to help focus central and peripheral vision simultaneously.
Ortho-K
Orthokeratology (ortho-k) is a custom rigid contact lens that can help improve your child’s blurry vision and reduce myopia progression while they sleep.
Ortho-k lenses are worn overnight and gently reshape the cornea, resulting in clearer vision throughout the day. So when your child heads to school or sporting activities, they won’t need to worry about foggy glasses or losing a contact lens.
